Loved those slides, Duncan, thanks! The iceberg metaphor especially was cool.
One thing that you may or may not have mentioned (didn’t see it on a slide) was that sometimes it’s not so clear-cut what’s ‘data’ and what’s ‘metadata’, for a given biological ‘thingy’. I know this is not strictly an issue for libraries & publication, but more of a general SemWeb / data annotation thing I suppose. But this is a potential sticky point for the newbie data manager who wants to get into the game with Semantic Web applications and stuff (this relates to a certain project in our group).

Hi Mummi, I agree the distinction between data and metadata can be blurred. That’s where the μετά / meta / after is useful because data is what we get first, metadata is everything that comes afterwards. This is obviously context dependent because different people see different things first, each person will have a different entry point (data) into the metadata.
